Hey, haven't done a post in forever. I've had such a nice few days, doing very little, reading, watching movies and just milling about at home. I've just finished watching 'The Kids are All Right' and yesterday I saw 'The Help'. That's two movies in tow days, for me that's big. I never normally watch movies, that's two hours of your time, which seems like a LOT of time to invest to one thing at home. I'm so glad it was these two films, they were both so amazing, so so amazing. I don't watch too many films, but the ones I do watch I love to death. So it's either I am easily impressed, or I'm just amazing at cherry-picking.

It all started yesterday. I was bored at home, it was about 4pm, everyone I know was either staying at home or too lazy to go out, so I decided to stroll into town on my own and just walk about a bit. I did think I'd find people I know, but once I got there I was pretty content with just walking about doing different things.

This is a couple having an argument. Well they were basically breaking up. She was crying her eyes out and he was pretty much laughing. You're probably appalled I took a photo of this VERY private moment, but I can explain. In my stroll through town I saw them at literally 3 different spots, arguing and the girl in hysterics. They'd basically been following me around, so I thought. Why not snap them?

After this shot I went into Waterstone's, and randomly I picked up a book called 'The Help', I recognized the title from someone tweet so I read the blurb. It sounded literally amazing and I stood there for 5 minutes reading bits of the book. Noone wanted to go out that night, so I decided I'd look for the movie online and watch it that night. Literally felt like a calling.

After watching 'The Color Purple' I feel a strange connection to stories about oppressed black people, where that oppression isn't the centre of the story but an omnipresent feature. 'The Color Purple' and 'The Help' fit the bill perfectly, fantastic stories that are enriched by their 'commentary' on race relations.

'The Help'

Set in Mississippi 1962 and deals with the phenomenon of black maids raising white children in Mississippi and the stories they have to tell about their treatment. The social commentary is worthy of a seperate blog, so I won't go into that too much, it was just a really nice film. Emma Stone is getting an Oscar for this, no doubt. The pace of the film is also REALLY impressive, considering there is just SO much to deal with here, and all the characters are interesting and develop throughout the film. I really recommend this film, mostly because I want someone to talk to about bits in it. It's funny, it gets you angered, it's emotionally charged, I'm just so surprised at the depth and variety of emotions that this one film (about 2 hours) can induce. Such an achievement. It better sweep come Spring (awards). When that time comes, it'll feel great, because although this is a huge hit America, I'll feel like this is 'my team' and 'my film.

I was so impressed with this film, my faith in Cinema was restored. That's another thing about me, I never ever go to the Cinema these days. Even saying the word sounds odd to me. It's overpriced and everyone sees the same thing, it rarely feels special. So I avoid films, unless I'm with a friend at home.

So the first thing I did today was wake up, read then find a film to watch.

I'll review 'The Kids are All Right' later. Too much to say.

Good Conversations

Don't people miss GOOD conversations. Like conversations that go on for hours, and the topic is something deeper than generic trite crap. I just had a little flashback to what I think was the best conversation I've ever had with someone, then I started thinking about more of these conversations, and I really do miss them. It's not necessarily gossip (that only takes about 30 minutes max), but this was actually about deep personal stuff on both parts.

It's not necessarily with people I would call my closest friends, so is that a problem? I try to keep people that I've had these conversations with close, and will do so forever.

This is a very random rant, but I'll like to read it in a few months and remember again some of these conversations. Some were on the phone and some were in person. Hell some even were in the good old days of MSN. I literally can't remember the last time I've had a GOOD conversation. Good chats are loose and frequent, but who really cares about that?

The following is about a friend of mine, no really, it isn't about me. If it was I would say, K?

Well, how do I begin? Story involves two friends. One's a complete BUM BITCH and the other is lovely. The lovely one has a horrible ex-boyfriend, who won't stop talking shit. Recently he's upped his came a bit, and has started saying some repulsive things to everyone in sight, including BB (Bum Bitch). Now these two are meant to be really good friends, so you think BB would completely lay into the boy and tell him to shut the fuck up.

Well she doesn't, she almost JOINS in and laughs at her VERY GOOD FRIEND behind her back. What's worse is that they text all the time now and go out on little outings. BB hasn't even told her friend about ANY of this and she's had to find out by other people, BB still hasn't fessed up. Good people don't like confrontation, so BB is getting away with this crime, for now. The fact that she's hiding all this, she must know she's doing a bad thing! Right?

But you know, there are some really shady people out there. There's two faced, and there's straight SCARY FACED BITCH.

When a Girl Is Executed … for Being Raped

We’re all focused right now on Libya and budget battles at home, but this story from Bangladesh just broke my heart and outraged me — and offers a reminder of the daily human rights struggles of so many women and girls in villages around the world. A 14-year-old Bangladeshi girl, Hena,allegedly was ambushed when she went to an outdoor toilet, gagged, beaten and raped by an older man in her village (who was actually her cousin). They were caught by wife of the alleged rapist, and the wife then beat Hena up. An imam at a local mosque issued a fatwa saying that Hena was guilty of adultery and must be punished, and a village makeshift court sentenced Hena to 100 lashes in a public whipping.

Her last words were protestations of innocence. An excellent CNN blog post, based on interviews with family members, says that the parents “had no choice but to mind the imam’s order. They watched as the whip broke the skin of their youngest child and she fell unconscious to the ground.”

Hena collapsed after 70 lashes and was taken to the hospital. She died a week later, by some accounts because of internal bleeding and a general loss of blood. The doctors recorded her death as a suicide. (Women and girls who are raped are typically expected to commit suicide, to spare everyone the embarrassment of an honor crime.) I’ve covered enough of these kinds of stories to know that it’s difficult to know exactly what happened unless you’re on the scene talking to everyone who was there; maybe the imam has a different version of events. But all accounts that I’ve seen such that this was a brutal attack on a helpless girl in the name of sharia and justice.

Fortunately, Bangladesh has a robust civil society, which has reacted with outrage to the case. A court ordered the body exhumed after word leaked out, and an examination revealed severe injuries. Lawsuits are now underway against the doctors who had called her death a suicide, and several people have been rounded up — including the alleged rapist. The Bangladesh press is on the case. But Hena’s family is under police protection because of concern that other villagers will take revenge at them for getting the imam and others in trouble.

Let’s hope that the public reaction and punishments are so strong that the word goes out to all of Bangladesh’s villages that such misogynist fatwas are not only immoral but also illegal. And that the crime lies not in being raped, but in raping.

The US pop star will perform on the Pyramid Stage on the last day of the event in Pilton in Somerset, Columbia Records revealed in a statement.

"I'm pumped just thinking about that huge audience and soaking up their energy," the 29-year-old star said.

Organisers of the festival, which runs from 22 to 26 June, have yet to officially announce 2011's line-up.

Tickets for this year's event went on sale in October and sold out in around four hours.

"This really is the biggest festival in the world and I cannot wait to perform there," said Knowles.

Black Swan (2010)

Electric, electric, electric! Truly a fantastic achievement in film! Just finished watching it, literally as I speak the credits roll. It's a perfect film, truly a perfect film - length-wise, emotions-wise, detail-wise, script-wise and casting-wise. Fantastic direction and focus throughout the film, felt a little bit like inception.

Absorbing, every single minute was absorbing, few experiences with film like this! Every single moment was absorbing!

The content does warrant some sort of comment; the most powerful message is the nature of art. How the best artists live and breathe their art, they are obsessed with their art, it consumes them. Natalie was outstanding here, perfect balance throughout the film. She played the frigid white Swan just as well as she played the seductive and expressive Black Swan! Her performance was genuine and profound, lightyears above any other performance in the film, and lightyears away from leading actresses in the last few years.

This is a film that is REALLY worth it's hype. Well done to them! Favourite movie in such a long time! Do wish there was a bit more ballet though, I trained for 17 years as a dancer in Moscow so I really appreciated those aspects of the film. Perhaps that's my only problem, not enough dancing. When they did dance though, the expressiveness and the creativity of the routines were some of the film's strongest assets.

It's a psychological thriller, don't think many expected such an experience, I know I didn't! The best scene other than the lesbian sex scene, has to be where Natalie comes on stage in the second act of Swan Lake, really strong performance! So convincing, so raw, so chilling! It's a great film throughout but perhaps the last 15 minutes or so are where it REALLY hits it's stride!

Natalie Portman is a star! This film is genius! Bravo!

Clint Eastwood is to direct Beyoncé Knowles in the latest remake of A Star Is Born, the classic Hollywood melodrama about a fading, drunken superstar who finds himself eclipsed by a younger model.

Eastwood is planning a musical version, mimicking the direction of the 1976 A Star Is Born, which cast Barbra Streisand alongside Kris Kristofferson and moved the story from the film industry to the music business. Deadline reports that studio Warner Bros had hoped to team Knowles with Will Smith, but this has not yet been confirmed. Robert Downey Jr and Mad Men's Jon Hamm are also rumoured to be under consideration, while Russell Crowe was reportedly in line for the role of the fading older star when news of the project broke last year.

A Star Is Born has already been remade twice. The original 1937 version starred Fredric March and Janet Gaynor as an ageing Hollywood actor and the bright young ingenue he takes under his wing. The film was remade in 1954 with James Mason and Judy Garland. Director Frank Pierson had wanted Elvis Presley for the 1976 version, but the singer reportedly turned down the role after being told he would not be given top billing, and it went to Kristofferson.

Eastwood will be taking on a musical for the first time as director, but the veteran actor and film-maker maintains an intense interest in music. His last film where appeared in front of the cameras, Gran Torino, featured Eastwood crooning over the end credits, and he composed scores for his recent films Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby and Changeling.

If you remember this was one of the albums I got in my massive spree, this has to be one of the best. I have her first album and this is just as good if not better, so rare I actually NOTICE real growth in an artist, and it's so clear here. What's she writing about, the melodies, the arrangement and the general quality of her vocals - all a big improvement from last time.

Her first album was a great album, and I don't know if she has as many hits on this album as she did on the last albums, 'Bust Your Windows' and 'Another Man' are instant classics, similarly I think 'Hold you Down' and 'Love You Long Time' will have a similar impact. The latter is probably my favourite song at the moment, youtube it, so impressive!

Other good songs include the duet with Ne-Yo and '10 Seconds' - but all the songs stand out to me really!

A really solid album, can't find a single filler or bad song, but that may be because it only has 11 songs, which may be the only fault.
But she's so impressive on this album, can't wait for her next few albums! Really happy with this!

Couple killed on way to plan funerals for three grandchildren

Tragedy added to tragedy Tuesday when an Ohio couple died in an accident on their way to help make funeral arrangements for their three grandchildren.

Marc and Misty Royce of Circleville were killed in a crash on a snowy road on their way to help Marc Royce's daughter, Kacey Stacey, plan funerals for her three children, who died in a mobile home fire over the weekend, CNN affiliate WBNS-TV reported.

In the car accident, Misty Royce's two children from a previous marriage and a 6-month-old baby they shared were injured. They were treated at a hospital, as were the occupants of a second vehicle in the crash, WBNS reported.

The children who died in the fire in Wheelersburg were Dwayne Charles Stacey, 3, Emily Rose Stacey, 2, and Alexis Stacey, 11 months.

Beyonce - I AM TOUR DVD - Review

I don't think I've ever been more excited for anything to get released than this DVD, that's why it's so puzzling that it took me so long to actually sit down and watch it after I purchased it. Well today it snowed, so I was stuck in, so I took this opportunity. Problems with DVD players, laptops etc tried to stopped me, but Beysus came to the rescue, I had to watch it today and I did.

So so amazing, and I love that she showed clips from all over the world so it wasn't just one static show, but the most covered shows were probably Rio de Janiero and London, she constantly showed parts of those shows.

Such a special woman, the crowds were so so good! I thought I was bad, but we had people fainting in like the first 5 minutes, people properly bawling and just generally buck-wild crowds. All through this, I don't want to imagine how I'd react. She was really good to her fans in this tour, so many opportunities to touch her, sing to her and all that jazz. I would faint and cry, and wee myself if I was as close to her as some fans were in the show! Unreal!

My favourite performances were probably YOU OUGHTA KNOW (If I Were a Boy part), Video Phone, Single Ladies, Freakum Dress, actually I'll end up listing them all because they were all superb. So I'll just say Halo as my absolute favourite, that was her last performance.

It's hard to compare this with the last tour DVD, because that was ALL stage performance, and no extras, but the performances were timeless, every second I still remember. I enjoyed this as a DVD more than anything she's released, maybe the Vegas DVD in close second, but as a show, can't choose between this and the Experience. Both outstanding though!

The personal touches made the DVD for me, they were so so nice to see!

I could go on and on and on! Just go buy the damn thing! AMAZING!

I've been round a friend's house the past two nights, and he has a X-BOX with Kinect. After being to the $1.3 billion C-E-R-N, I honestly think that KINECT has far better technology than CERN.

Just can't believe what it can do, give it 3 years and they develop some good games on this thing, I could get an Xbox!

Taylor Swift - Speak Now

Review coming soon, really really enjoyed this.

Too lazy to do a proper review for this, but just want to say how much I love this album. Taylor Swift is like Marmite I think, and I'm at the right end of the two extremes. Her songs are so so clever, and she's so so emotional! There aren't many experiences with music as good as this. My favourite songs are Enchanted, Dear John and Mean. Give them a listen.

It's nice to listen to music like Taylor's in between the Kanye's, the Cee-Los and the rest. Just soft, easy listening, but thoughtful listening.

I always find that my favourite albums of all time I've taken with me to a trip somewhere, #1 is probably Brandy-Afrodisaic and I took that to York in Year 6, then Taylor Swift's Fearless to Germany last year and Mariah Carey E=MC on the same trip. I think I now have the same relationship with this album, I took it with me for four days in France, and I had a dock in my room there, so at night I'd just blast this till I got to sleep.

I wish more people would give her a chance, but it's not the sort of music everyone will like, as I said, hit or miss. But if you like music that's emotionally charged, then Taylor's ya gal!

What i said on first listen -

She connects on such a personal level, her charm is unquestionable as well as her lyrical and all-round musical prowess. She understand listeners, some really amazing songs on Speak Now, Fearless was GREAT, but this is EVEN better!

Came back from Switzerland/France from a school trip, on the way back some of my friends created the masterpiece that is my new hairstyle. Product of peer pressure and the hypersexualisation of the black man. It'll probably last a week or so I predict, if not just three more days. Not looking forward to going completely bald though, not a good look!

I LOVE being Upset about something

It's really nice to be upset about something, right now I'm upset about something, and as soon as I thought of the post I got over it. Well not really, but I'm getting there.

It's fascinating because you can step back for a bit and think, Why am I Upset about this? What exactly is it that I'm upset about?

I won't say what the thing is at this moment, but say I was upset because I lost my pencil case (Which actually did happen today!) I can step back and say, what exactly about losing my pencil case is upsetting? Is it what's in the pencil case? Or is it that as I like to feel organised, so I'm upset that I've let something very important go missing in a very careless manner. Or is it that I'm upset because I've attached some sentimental value to this pencil case that I've had for almost 2 years. Am I upset that as well as a sentimental value, I've attached something very superstitious to this pencil case, as I had it through my summer exams, which went quite well.

By asking these questions in detail, not only do I distract myself from what I'm upset about, I also learn so much more about myself in the process. Maybe I would have been able to explain this idea with a less trivial reason for getting upset, but I think you get the point.

It's really a very therapeutic mechanism,

Student Protest

Looking at the pictures from today, of both the anarchists and the more peaceful protesters puts a smile on my face. It's unacceptable what the Government is doing, and I'm glad so many people came out to show their disgust.

It's very rare for news to be so relevant and poignant to me, but the rise in tuition fees really is. Cuts do need to be made, but I do not see how it can be justified to pass on debts intergenerationally. It's unethical, and as much as some in the Government like to say that it's progressive, it's violently regressive.

How can people that went to University for free, expect to turn around and impose such ludicrous fees on a whole generation. This march is so important for the issue of tuition fees, at the very least Government will be far less ready to raise tuition fees in the future, they see just HOW appalled we are. The NUS thought about 2 weeks ago hundreds would go to the protest, this morning it was 16,000, the actual number for the day was 50,000. We are appalled!

For some students, their parents face cuts to their wages, the danger of osing their pension or worse being completely unemployed. How in the world can these people expect to aspire to higher education, with these fees how can a generation aspire to higher education.

I have to write one now, I'm feeling very dramatic, feeling very poetic, feeling very pretentious! How are we all? Normally bad weather fuels my blog posts, but it's just cold now, so let's not keep going on about my S.A.D. I just want to write what's in my head.

I was feeling VERY dramatic last friday, I walked out of the sponsored walk, well cycled away I felt like I was on the O.C. Dogowners are the most insenstive people in the world, well some anyways. I'm shit sacred of dogs, and I had to leave. I felt very VERY dramatic.

Not sure why I recapped that but there we go.
